Navy Life: common questions

Can recruits use their phones at boot camp?

No. Recruit Training Command boxes up phones with other personal belongings on arrival and returns them the day before graduation. Mail is the main way to stay in touch, with a small number of scheduled phone calls.

What should I bring to boot camp?

Very little: identification, your Social Security card, immunization records and a short list of permitted personal items. Our boot camp packing list follows the official Recruit Training Command guidance.

Does every sailor serve on a ship?

No. Many sailors do, but others serve in aviation squadrons, submarines, hospitals, expeditionary units and shore commands. Your rating and orders decide where you go.
